Biography

Malaina Joseph-Sobers is a British-Guyanese contemporary artist whose work focuses on personal and collective histories. Working mainly in painting, alongside sculpture and installation, Joseph-Sobers creates abstract artworks of atmospheres, sensations and perceptions, distilling personal and collective experiences in order to highlight the transformative potential of art. Through her work, Joseph-Sobers encourages a deeper understanding of the human condition by challenging us to confront our own psychic layers. She embraces abstraction as a language that enables exploration of consciousness and the various layers of skin (psychic, physical, painterly, emotional, historical) we all have to shed in the constant flux of becoming.
